Windows 12 on Hold, But Windows 11 Gets Major AI-Powered Overhaul in 2024

Hold your horses, Windows 12 enthusiasts! While the next big iteration of Microsoft's OS was rumored for this year, it seems we'll have to wait until 2025. Instead, 2024 will be all about a major overhaul for Windows 11, codenamed "Hudson Valley" and arriving as version 24H2 in September.



Hudson Valley: A Big Leap for Windows 11, Not Windows 12

Forget a whole new OS – Hudson Valley is a substantial upgrade for Windows 11, packing a punch of new features and improvements. Think of it as a Windows 11 2.0, not a standalone successor. This shift reflects Microsoft's focus on closing the adoption gap between Windows 10 and 11, currently at a staggering 1 billion user difference.



AI Takes the Spotlight:

Get ready for an AI-powered experience! Hudson Valley revolves heavily around next-gen AI integration. Expect an enhanced Copilot, smarter search and context understanding, and potentially even AI-driven features like Timeline, Super Resolution, and dynamic desktop backgrounds.



Beyond AI: A Feast of New Features

The AI focus doesn't overshadow other goodies. Hudson Valley promises updates for Snap Layouts, File Explorer, Quick Settings, Phone Link, and even a new Energy Saver mode. Performance, security, and UX improvements are also on the menu, along with some quality-of-life changes like potentially retiring built-in apps like Cortana and Mail.



When Can You Get It?

While manufacturers get early access in April, Hudson Valley reaches regular users in September. This aligns with the expected launch of next-gen AI PCs, further solidifying the AI-centric theme of the update.
