Pakistan's Social Media Turmoil: X Outages Amid Election Controversy

In recent events, Pakistan has been rocked by multiple outages on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, raising serious concerns amidst allegations of electoral fraud and escalating protests following the 2024 general elections. Users across the nation faced difficulties accessing the platform on multiple occasions, with the most recent outage occurring on Saturday night, February 18th, adding to a series of disruptions in recent months.



While authorities attribute these outages to technical faults, suspicions linger regarding potential intentional restrictions during periods of political turmoil. NetBlocks, an independent internet watchdog, confirmed national-scale disruptions during these incidents, highlighting the severity of the situation. Despite the widespread impact on users, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has remained silent, fueling concerns about censorship and the erosion of freedom of expression.



These outages are not isolated incidents; similar disruptions have affected other social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube in the past, coinciding with political events and protests. Digital activists have been vocal in raising concerns about the implications for civil liberties and access to information in Pakistan.
