Developed by the Institute of Space Technology (IST) in collaboration with China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and Pakistan's national space agency, SUPARCO, iCube Qamar is a CubeSat – a miniaturized satellite weighing only about 7 kilograms. Despite its compact size, the iCube Qamar packs a powerful punch. Equipped with two optical cameras, the satellite is designed to capture detailed images of the lunar surface.
A Chance Collaboration and a Stepping Stone for the Future
The opportunity for Pakistan to participate in this lunar mission arose in 2022 when the China National Space Agency (CNSA) offered member states of the Asia Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO) the chance to contribute a student-built payload to their Chang'e 6 mission. iCube Qamar's proposal, submitted by IST, was selected after a rigorous evaluation process.
This collaboration not only allowed Pakistani scientists and students to gain valuable experience in deep space exploration but also paves the way for future, more ambitious missions. Dr. Khurram Khurshid, a core member of the project, highlights this by stating "This is the first step, a step in the right direction. It can lead to bigger space missions, such as landing on the moon or various other experiments."
Capturing the Moon: A Week of Testing and First Images
Following its successful deployment, iCube Qamar will undergo a series of tests over the next week. These tests will ensure the functionality of the satellite's various systems, including communication and battery life.
The big moment for space enthusiasts arrives around May 15th or 16th, when the first images captured by iCube Qamar are expected to be transmitted back to Earth.
