Google Meet Gets a Smarter Edge: AI-Powered Note-Taking with "Take Notes for Me"

Google Meet is stepping up its game by introducing a powerful AI feature that promises to revolutionize the way you handle meetings. The new "Take notes for me" feature, powered by Google's Gemini AI, is rolling out to select Google Workspace users, offering an automated way to capture key points during meetings. Here's everything you need to know about this game-changing tool.

What is "Take Notes for Me"?

"Take notes for me" is an AI-driven feature designed to automatically take notes during Google Meet sessions. It simplifies the process of staying engaged in discussions by handling the note-taking for you and creating a bulleted summary of the meeting in real-time. The generated notes are stored in a Google Doc, attached to the calendar event, and saved in the meeting organizer's Google Drive, making it easily accessible for all participants within your organization.

Key Features and Benefits

  1. Automatic Note-Taking:

    • Activate the feature by clicking the pencil icon in the top right corner of Google Meet. Once enabled, the AI captures key points during the meeting, ensuring you don't miss out on important details while staying focused on the discussion.
  2. Real-Time Summaries:

    • The "Summary so far" feature is particularly useful for latecomers. It provides a real-time summary of the conversation, allowing participants to catch up on what they missed without disrupting the flow of the meeting.
  3. Easy Access and Organization:

    • The notes are automatically saved in the meeting organizer’s Drive and attached to the calendar event, making them easy to access for future reference. If meeting recordings or transcripts are enabled, they will be linked within the notes document, providing a comprehensive record of the discussion.
  4. Enhanced Focus and Productivity:

    • By eliminating the need to take manual notes, "Take notes for me" allows you to focus entirely on active participation. This can significantly enhance productivity by reducing the cognitive load during meetings.

Availability and Requirements

The feature is currently rolling out to select Google Workspace users with specific add-ons, such as Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education Premium, or AI Meetings and Messaging. The rollout is expected to be completed by September 10th, 2024. It's important to note that this feature is only available for meetings conducted in English on desktop computers or laptops.

Limitations

While "Take notes for me" is a powerful tool, it does come with certain limitations:

  • Language Support: Currently, the feature only supports meetings conducted in English.
  • Device Compatibility: It is only available for meetings on desktops and laptops, excluding mobile devices for now.
  • Manual Activation: The note-taking feature needs to be manually enabled within the meeting.

Final Thoughts

"Take notes for me" is a significant addition to Google Meet, bringing AI-powered efficiency to your meetings. By automating the note-taking process, it allows users to stay fully engaged in discussions without worrying about missing key points. This feature is especially beneficial for those who often find themselves juggling between active participation and note-taking.
