YouTube Premium Price Hike Hits Europe and Asia: Is It Still Worth the Cost?

Heads up, YouTube Premium users! Starting in November 2024, you’ll need to shell out more for that ad-free experience. YouTube has announced another round of price increases, hitting both individual and family plans, especially across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Some regions are seeing hikes as high as 50%, sparking debate about whether YouTube Premium remains a good value. Here's what you need to know.




What's Changing?

YouTube Premium, which offers ad-free viewing, offline downloads, background playback, and access to YouTube Music, is getting more expensive for many users outside the U.S. The price hikes vary by region but are particularly noticeable in countries like:

  • Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Ireland: Family plan jumps from €17.99 to €25.99; individual plans rise from €12 to €14.
  • Switzerland: Family plan skyrockets from 23.90 CHF to 33.90 CHF, while individual plans move from 16 CHF to 18 CHF.
  • Sweden: Family plans jump from 179 SEK to 279 SEK.
  • Singapore: Family plans will see a 56% increase, rising from S$17.98 to S$27.98.



YouTube users in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Middle East will also see price increases, while India experienced a hike earlier this year, around 15-20%.

Why Is YouTube Premium Raising Prices?

Although YouTube hasn’t provided a detailed explanation, the company has shared a few key reasons for the hike:

  1. Improving the Service: YouTube claims that the extra revenue will allow it to continue delivering high-quality features and supporting creators.
  2. Rising Costs: Some speculate that the hike is due to global inflation and increasing operational costs.
  3. Content Creation: YouTube might be channelling more revenue to content creators, given its growing investment in supporting the platform's creators.



Is YouTube Premium Still Worth It?

With price hikes as steep as 50%, many users are questioning whether YouTube Premium offers enough value to justify the new rates. Let’s weigh the pros and cons.

  • Assess Your Usage: If you primarily use YouTube for music streaming, consider switching to alternatives like Spotify or Apple Music, which may now be cheaper.
  • Explore Free Tiers: If you can tolerate ads, the free version of YouTube remains available. You could also check out services like Spotify’s free tier for music streaming.
  • Family Plans: Family plans remain one of the better deals, especially if multiple users in the household rely on YouTube Premium features.




Final Thoughts: Is It Worth the New Price?

The answer depends on your specific needs. If you heavily rely on YouTube for ad-free video content, background play, and offline downloads, then you might still find value in YouTube Premium despite the price increase.
