Tensor G5: Early Leaks Spark Concern Over Performance, But Gaming Fans May Have a Reason for Optimism


The Pixel series, known for its standout camera and unique Google-centric software features, has had one lingering weakness over the years: raw processing power. Google’s custom Tensor chips have yet to catch up to rivals like Apple’s A-series or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon in terms of sheer performance. Now, with the upcoming Tensor G5 chip expected to power Google’s Pixel 10 in late 2025, early benchmark leaks have fueled discussions, both positive and cautious, about Google’s latest chip endeavour.




Disappointing Early Benchmarks Raise Concerns

A recent Geekbench listing shows the Tensor G5 achieving a single-core score of 1,323 and a multi-core score of 4,004, which places it notably behind current flagship chips from Qualcomm, Apple, and even some MediaTek models. In comparison, the Tensor G4 in the Pixel 9 recorded single-core and multi-core scores of 1,950 and 4,741, respectively. This initial peek at the G5’s performance has been somewhat disappointing, suggesting that the G5 may struggle to meet the standards set by leading processors in flagship devices.




New CPU Architecture and Manufacturing Shift

The Tensor G5 is expected to feature a combination of Cortex-X4, Cortex-A725, and Cortex-A520 cores, designed to provide a balanced but relatively modest performance boost. However, while these cores represent a step forward in efficiency, they may lack the raw power of newer alternatives that competitors are anticipated to adopt.
