WhatsApp Alert: Older Android Devices to Lose Support in 2025

If you're still using an older Android phone, here's a critical update you don't want to miss. Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer support devices running Android KitKat or earlier. This change will impact millions of users globally, making it essential to take immediate steps to secure your WhatsApp data and consider upgrading to a newer smartphone.




Why Is WhatsApp Dropping Support for Older Devices?

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, constantly evolves to integrate advanced features, including AI-powered functionalities. These updates demand modern hardware and software to ensure seamless operation. Unfortunately, older devices cannot support these advancements. Think of it as trying to run the latest apps on a phone from 2013—it’s simply not feasible.




By ending support for outdated systems, WhatsApp ensures a smoother user experience while introducing innovative features. Similar updates have been rolled out in the past, such as ending support for iPhones running iOS versions older than 15.1.

Is Your Device Affected?

Steps to Secure Your WhatsApp Data

If you’re affected by this change, follow these steps to back up your WhatsApp data and restore it to a newer device:




Back-Up Your Data:

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup.

  2. Tap Back Up to Google Drive and select a backup frequency.

  3. Tap Back Up to start the process.

Restore Your Data to a New Device:

  1. Install WhatsApp on your new phone.

  2. Verify your phone number.

  3. When prompted, tap Restore to retrieve your chat history from Google Drive.

Backing up ensures you don’t lose your valuable conversations, photos, and videos when transitioning to a new device.

What About iPhone Users?

This isn’t just an Android issue. WhatsApp has also announced it will stop supporting iPhones running iOS versions older than 15.1. However, iPhone users have a slightly longer grace period until May 5, 2025, to upgrade.




Devices such as iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus will be affected. If you’re using one of these models, take action to secure your WhatsApp data and transition to a newer iPhone.
