Meta’s New AI App: A Chat-GPT Competitor Powered by Llama 4

Meta just launched a new standalone Meta AI app, an AI assistant powered by the Llama 4 model. It’s Meta’s move to challenge Chat-GPT with a chat app that also has social and voice features. For users, this means Meta’s AI lives in its own app.




Key Features

The app greets you with a simple chat screen, asking “Where should we start?”. At the bottom, there are tabs for home, Discover feed, and history. The layout is clean and user-friendly.

  • Discover Feed: A social feed of AI prompts and answers. You can browse interesting questions other people have asked or post your own. It’s a way to see what the community is asking the AI.

  • Image Generation & Editing: Ask the AI to create or modify images. Describe what you want (for example, “draw a sunset on the beach”) and it will make that picture.

  • Voice Interaction: You can talk to the AI out loud. It listens and replies in a natural voice. Meta even has a mode for back-and-forth conversation, making it feel more like chatting with a friend.

  • Smart Glasses Integration: If you have Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, they link with the app. You could ask something about your glasses and keep chatting on your phone, or vice versa.




The Discover feed shows user posts and AI answers. You can swipe through them to get ideas or find helpful Q&A. It’s like a mini social feed just for AI conversations.

Powered by Llama 4

Under the hood is Llama 4, Meta’s newest large language model. Like GPT-4 (the model behind Chat-GPT), it can answer questions, write creatively, and chat with you. Meta tuned Llama 4 to remember context and feel personal. For example, it can pull info from your Facebook or Instagram (with permission) to tailor its replies, making it a true social AI.




Personalisation and Privacy

You can link your Facebook or Instagram so the AI knows your interests and remembers details to fit answers to you. But this raises privacy questions. Meta says it will only use your data with your permission, and you control what the AI remembers. Still, many people will be cautious about any assistant using personal information.




Pros and Concerns

The Meta AI app is free (for now) and packed with fun features. Its voice chat and social feed make it easy and entertaining to use. It could be great for brainstorming ideas or casual conversations.




However, Meta is late to the AI game, so it has to catch up to Chat-GPT and others. Also, being from Facebook’s parent company raises privacy worries. Users will want proof that their data is safe. Meta needs to show the assistant can be helpful without misusing personal info if it wants to win people over.

Looking Ahead

  • Premium Features: Meta may offer paid plans for faster responses or more image generations.

  • Developer Tools: Meta might provide APIs or toolkits so creators can build new things on Llama 4 or integrate the AI into other apps.

  • Deeper Integrations: Over time, this AI could tie into more of Meta’s world, like VR apps on Oculus, smart glasses, or Instagram content.




In short, Meta’s AI app is a bold new experiment mixing chatbots with social media. It’s still early and has to earn user trust, but it shows where voice AI, smart glasses AI, and social networks might come together. For now, many tech fans will watch closely to see how it evolves.
