Google Drive Glitch Causes Panic, Data Recovery Tools Now Available

Millions of Google Drive users were left in a state of panic last month when a critical bug caused their files to disappear. The issue, affecting version 84 of the desktop app, resulted in the loss of months, and even years, of data for some users. Thankfully, Google has released a fix alongside several data recovery methods, offering a glimmer of hope for those affected.

The Glitch: A Nightmare for Users

The reports first surfaced in late November, with users logging in to find their Drive empty. The bug appeared to selectively target local files that hadn't been uploaded to the cloud, leaving users distraught and desperate for solutions. While Google confirmed that the issue only impacted a "small subset" of users, the potential consequences were severe, with some claiming the loss of irreplaceable files.

The Fix: A Patch with Recovery Options

After weeks of investigation, Google released a patch in December, updating the Drive for desktop app to version 85.0.13.0. However, the fix alone wasn't enough. To help users recover their lost data,



Google implemented several recovery tools:

  • Built-in recovery tool: This simple tool offers the easiest solution for most users. By running the tool from within the Drive app, users can attempt to restore their lost files.
  • Command line interface: For tech-savvy users, Google provides instructions for using the command line to recover lost data. This method offers more control but requires a deeper understanding of computer systems.
  • Backup options: Users who regularly back up their computers can potentially restore their Drive files from a backup. This includes tools like Windows Backup and Time Machine.


The Recovery Process: Not a Guarantee

Unfortunately, even with these tools available, data recovery success isn't guaranteed. Factors like the severity of the bug's impact and user actions during the incident can influence the outcome. Google advises users to update their apps and avoid logging out of Drive or modifying app data folders to maximise their chances of recovery.



The Takeaway: A Reminder of the Importance of Backups

While the Google Drive bug has caused significant distress for many users, it serves as a valuable reminder of the importance of data backups. Regardless of the platform used, regularly backing up crucial information ensures its safety and provides a safety net in case of unexpected glitches or incidents.
