Meta Implements Stricter DM Controls to Enhance Teen Safety on Facebook and Instagram
In response to growing concerns about online safety for teenagers, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has implemented new measures to safeguard teens from potentially unwanted contact. The move follows legal challenges and criticism regarding the platform's handling of underage users.
Key Changes: Meta's latest update introduces default settings that prevent users under 16 (or 18 in certain regions) from receiving direct messages (DMs) on Instagram and Messenger from anyone they don't follow. Even fellow teens won't be able to send unsolicited messages by default. The company aims to create a safer, age-appropriate digital experience for teens across its apps.
Enhanced Parental Controls: As part of the safety update, Meta has strengthened parental controls. Parents using supervision tools now can approve or deny their teens' requests to modify default privacy and safety settings. This empowers guardians to actively shape their teens' online experiences and protect them from potential risks.
Privacy Measures on Messenger: On Messenger, young users under 16 (or 18 in certain countries) will only receive messages from their Facebook friends or people in their phone contacts. This privacy feature aims to limit communication to known connections, reducing the likelihood of unwanted interactions.
Notification System: Existing users will receive notifications about these changes, ensuring they are aware of the enhanced safety measures. Meta emphasizes its commitment to providing transparent communication and empowering users and parents with information about the evolving platform features.
Ongoing Safety Initiatives: These updates come as part of Meta's broader efforts to address concerns related to the safety of younger users. Earlier this month, the company rolled out tools to restrict access to content related to self-harm, graphic violence, and eating disorders for users under 16. Additionally, Meta plans to launch a feature discouraging the sharing of inappropriate images in end-to-end encrypted chats.
Global Regulatory Scrutiny: Meta's proactive measures align with increased regulatory scrutiny globally. The company faces legal challenges and requests for information from regulators concerning child safety and the impact of its platforms on young users. The evolving landscape emphasizes the need for social media giants to prioritize user safety and privacy.

Meta's implementation of stricter DM controls and enhanced parental supervision tools reflects its commitment to creating a safer online environment for teens. These measures, coupled with ongoing initiatives, aim to address concerns raised by regulators and ensure age-appropriate digital experiences for younger users on Facebook and Instagram. As the platform continues to evolve, it faces the challenge of balancing user engagement with the responsibility to protect its diverse user base, particularly the vulnerable teen demographic.
