Google Maps Makes EV Navigation Easier with New Charging Station Filter and Street Highlights

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular, but finding charging stations can sometimes be a challenge. Google Maps is making things easier for EV drivers with a new update that adds a dedicated "Charging stations" filter and improves street identification.



Finding Charging Stations at a Glance

Previously, Google Maps displayed a "Gas stations" filter by default. EV drivers now have the option to switch this to a "Charging stations" filter, making it quicker and easier to find charging points near their location. This change requires setting your vehicle type as "Electric" in the Google Maps settings.



More Informed Charging Decisions

The update also provides more information about charging stations. You can see details like address, charging speed (slow, medium, fast, or very fast), and the number of chargers available. This allows drivers to make informed decisions about which station to use based on their needs and urgency.



Improved Street Identification

In addition to the EV-focused features, Google Maps now highlights the entire length of a street in blue when you search for it. This replaces the previous method of showing just a pin on the map, giving you a better understanding of the street's location and extent. This can be helpful when navigating unfamiliar areas or planning routes with multiple streets.



A Look Ahead for EV Drivers

These updates are part of Google's ongoing efforts to improve the experience for EV drivers using Google Maps. With the increasing adoption of EVs, we can expect to see even more features and functionalities designed to make EV ownership more convenient and efficient.

While Google Maps is a valuable tool for EV drivers, it's important to consider other resources as well. Some EV apps specialize in route planning for electric vehicles, taking into account factors like battery range and charging station availability. Additionally, the EPA's new rules on carbon emissions will likely lead to a surge in EV adoption, which in turn will encourage the development of more EV-friendly infrastructure and services.



Overall, Google Maps' latest update is a welcome step towards making EV ownership more convenient. With easier charging station discovery, improved route planning, and a growing ecosystem of EV-centric resources, the future looks bright for electric vehicles.
