AI-Powered Windows Laptops: Nvidia & MediaTek’s Next-Gen Chip at Computex 2025

 


Excitement is building ahead of Computex 2025 as rumours swirl that Nvidia and MediaTek will unveil a new Arm-based chip for Windows laptops. The buzz is about a possible N1/N1X processor family – a Nvidia–MediaTek collaboration aimed at AI laptops and the Windows-on-Arm market. This chip is expected to blend Nvidia’s AI/graphics expertise with MediaTek’s power-efficient Arm CPU design. According to leaks, it could be announced by both companies’ CEOs in mid-May. If true, this is big news for next-generation laptops and the move toward Windows on Arm PCs.




What’s Inside: Cutting-Edge Arm CPU + Nvidia GPU

While details are still unofficial, early reports suggest these new Nvidia-MediaTek chips use advanced Arm CPU cores and Nvidia’s latest GPU tech. In fact, Nvidia already teased a 20-core Arm CPU (10 high-performance Cortex-X925 cores plus 10 efficient Cortex-A725 cores) paired with a Blackwell GPU in a prototype “mini supercomputer” earlier in 2025. The rumoured laptop chips (codenamed N1X for high-end, N1 for mid-range) are expected to be scaled-down versions of that design. They likely use Cortex-X925 cores (big, fast Arm cores) and a custom Nvidia Blackwell GPU architecture for graphics. This combo – top-tier Arm CPU from MediaTek and Nvidia’s new GPU – promises strong processing power while staying energy-efficient. They might even be built on an advanced process node (around 3nm), which helps keep heat and battery draw low.




What This Means: AI Performance, Battery Life, and Graphics

Put simply, these chips could turn Windows laptops into true AI laptops with longer battery life and solid graphics. By combining powerful AI-capable GPU hardware with efficient CPU design, they aim to:

  • Faster AI Tasks: The new SoCs should speed up on-device AI work (like photo editing, transcription, or voice assistants). Think of notebooks that run AI algorithms (even large language models) quicker than before – an “AI laptop” you can carry.

  • Longer Battery Life: MediaTek’s Arm CPUs are known for power efficiency. Even with the beefy Nvidia GPU onboard, the chip should sip less power than a typical x86 laptop chip. This could mean many more hours of use per charge.

  • Better Graphics and Gaming: Nvidia’s Blackwell GPU tech could deliver strong graphics performance. The rumour mill says performance might rival a mid-range discrete GPU (some speculate around RTX 4070 mobile levels). In practical terms, you might play games and run creative apps on a Windows-on-Arm laptop much smoother than before.

  • Full Windows Support: Unlike some smartphone chips, these SoCs are built specifically for laptops, so they would run full Windows natively. (Keep in mind, very old x86-only applications might still need Microsoft’s emulation layer, which can occasionally slow things down for games or legacy software.)




Taken together, these improvements could make Windows-on-Arm laptops a lot more appealing. Imagine a next-gen laptop that boots fast, runs AI apps on-device, lasts a day, and still plays games decently – that’s the promise here.

Competition: Challenging Qualcomm and Intel/AMD

This new Nvidia-MediaTek chip could shake up the laptop CPU market. Right now, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series is the main Arm chip for Windows laptops, and Intel/AMD dominate the traditional x86 side. A powerful Nvidia-armed SoC would directly challenge both. Qualcomm has had a head start on Windows-on-Arm, but it focuses on efficiency more than raw GPU power. Meanwhile, Intel and AMD are responding with their own AI-focused chips. If Nvidia and MediaTek deliver, future next-gen laptops might use this chip instead of an Intel or AMD CPU, especially for AI-heavy and graphics tasks. Potential Hurdles: Software, Supply, and Timing

Despite the hype, there are real challenges ahead:

  • Software Compatibility: Windows-on-Arm can run most apps, but older x86 programs still need translation (Microsoft’s “Prism” emulation). That can cause glitches or slower performance in some games and specialised software. Nvidia and MediaTek will have to work closely with Microsoft to smooth out any software kinks.

  • Manufacturing Challenges: Cutting-edge chips (especially at advanced nodes like 3nm) are hard to produce. MediaTek has reportedly booked extra semiconductor packaging capacity to handle this chip, but actually building large quantities is tough. Yield issues, supply shortages, or high costs could slow things down.

  • Possible Delays: Early reports suggest tech hurdles might push the first laptops with this chip to late 2025 or even 2026, rather than right after Computex. So even if the announcement happens at Computex 2025, actual products on shelves might take months longer. This means we may hear more leaks and previews throughout 2025 before getting the final devices.




Even so, the excitement is real. Companies often announce chips long before they ship, and interest in AI PCs is high. Gamers and creative professionals, in particular, will be watching to see if Nvidia’s GPU magic can overcome the usual Windows-on-Arm limitations.

Industry Trends: The Future of AI PCs and Arm

This Nvidia-MediaTek collaboration fits into a bigger tech trend. The PC industry is clearly moving toward AI-focused designs and Arm-based computing. Apple’s success with Arm-based MacBooks (their own silicon) showed the world that high-performance, energy-efficient laptops are possible outside x86. Microsoft has been promoting Windows on Arm for a few years (once under a Qualcomm exclusivity deal, now open to others). Now, a heavyweight like Nvidia jumping into PC CPUs signals a shift: even the graphics giant sees Arm’s future in laptops.




For the Windows on Arm ecosystem, this could be a tipping point. Nvidia has the gaming and AI leadership, and MediaTek brings mobile chip experience. Together, they might accelerate the era of “AI laptops” – notebooks that handle neural networks and graphics-heavy tasks natively. Eventually, we could see more laptops ditching x86 altogether. That doesn’t mean Intel/AMD will disappear tomorrow, but it does mean PC makers have a fresh option for next-gen designs.
