Employee Fired, Internal Discussion Board Shut Down as Google Grapples with Tensions

Tensions are high at Google after a cloud engineer was fired for protesting the company's contract with the Israeli military. This incident highlights a growing rift within Google, where employees are increasingly questioning the company's involvement in controversial projects.



Employee Makes Public Stand

The fired employee disrupted a presentation by Barak Regev, managing director of Google Israel, at the Mind the Tech conference in New York. He shouted, "I refuse to build technology that powers genocide or surveillance!" This outburst came amid criticism of Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion deal granting Google and Amazon cloud service access to the Israeli government and military.



Employee Concerns Not Unique

This incident is just the latest example of employee dissent at Google. Hundreds of employees previously signed a letter urging the company to drop its sponsorship of Mind the Tech. Additionally, concerns have been raised about Project Maven, a Defense Department contract involving Google technology.



Internal Discussion Board Silenced

Further amplifying employee discontent, Google shut down its internal discussion board Dory ahead of an International Women's Day summit. The board was flooded with comments questioning the impact of Project Nimbus and the AI chatbot Gemini on Palestinian women. Some employees also raised the issue of Mai Ubeid, a former Google engineer killed in an Israeli airstrike.



Google's Response

Google defended its actions, stating the fired employee violated company policy by disrupting an official event. The company spokesperson also emphasized its commitment to a "democratic values" workplace with diverse opinions. However, the termination and forum closure suggests a desire to control the narrative.
