Google Maps Gets Smarter for Summer Travel: AI Itineraries, Curated Lists, and More

Summer travel season is upon us, and Google Maps is gearing up to be your ultimate travel companion. The popular mapping app just unveiled a slew of new features designed to make trip planning, exploration, and discovery a breeze.

AI-Powered Itineraries

Struggling to craft the perfect itinerary for your dream vacation? Google is testing a new feature in Search Generative Experience (SGE) that will do the heavy lifting for you. Simply ask something like "Plan a 3-day history trip to Philadelphia," and Google AI will generate a sample itinerary with attractions, restaurants, and even a glimpse of potential flight and hotel options. This feature is currently limited to users enrolled in SGE and available only in English in the U.S., but it hints at the exciting possibilities of AI-powered travel planning.

Curated Recommendations and Hidden Gems

Finding things to do in a new city can be overwhelming. Google Maps is addressing this by introducing curated recommendation lists. When you search for a city, you'll now see "Lists in [city]" featuring recommendations from trusted sources like The Infatuation, Lonely Planet, The New York Times, and OpenTable. Google Maps will also curate its own lists based on trending spots, consistently popular places, and hidden gems – all surfaced through user activity and Google's AI insights.

Imagine discovering the latest hot restaurants in Chicago or unearthing a neighbourhood's secret pizza haven – all within the Google Maps app! These features are initially rolling out in over 40 U.S. and Canadian cities.

Enhanced Lists and Social Sharing

Do you meticulously plan your trips with detailed lists? Google Maps is making list creation and sharing even better. You can now reorder places within your lists, perfect for crafting a chronological itinerary. Additionally, you can link social media content like reviews to your list entries, providing context and recommendations for fellow travellers. These customization options will be available globally on Android and iOS later this month.

AI Insights at a Glance

Google Maps is leveraging AI to provide a more comprehensive understanding of places at first glance. When you view a restaurant, for example, AI might identify photos showcasing popular dishes and display relevant information like cost, popularity, and even dietary options like vegetarian or vegan. This feature empowers you to make informed decisions on the go, saving you valuable time and research.

Aesthetics and Usability Improvements

Google Maps isn't just getting smarter; it's also getting a visual refresh. The app will boast a cleaner home screen with fewer tabs and new pin colours for improved usability.

Overall, these updates solidify Google Maps' position as a one-stop shop for summer travel planning. With AI-powered insights, curated recommendations, and improved list management, Google Maps empowers you to explore new destinations with confidence and discover hidden gems along the way.

Beyond Google Maps

It's important to note that Google isn't the only player in the travel tech game. Startups like Mindtrip and Layla offer AI-powered travel assistants, while established platforms like Instagram's Threads are vying for user attention. As the travel industry embraces AI, we can expect even more innovative tools and services to emerge in the coming years.
