Huawei's latest tech innovation has sparked a firestorm of controversy in Washington D.C. The Chinese tech giant unveiled a new AI-powered laptop, the MateBook X Pro, boasting Intel's latest Core Ultra 9 processor. This seemingly innocuous announcement has reignited tensions between the US and China, with American lawmakers questioning why Huawei, a company on the US trade blacklist, has access to this cutting-edge technology.




A History of Tangled Tech Ties

The story goes back to 2019 when the US placed Huawei on a trade restriction list, citing concerns over Iran sanctions and China's overall technological ambitions. This meant American companies like Intel would need special licenses to supply Huawei with components. The Trump administration granted one such license, allowing Intel to continue shipping central processors for Huawei laptops.




The AI Chip Controversy

Fast forward to today, Huawei unveils its new laptop with an Intel AI chip. This has some US lawmakers up in arms, questioning how Huawei got its hands on this new technology, especially considering the ongoing trade restrictions. They suspect the Commerce Department might have quietly approved shipments of the new chip, despite previous assurances that such licenses wouldn't be renewed.
