For years, this wait time has been an inevitable part of the iPhone setup process. But that might be a thing of the past thanks to Apple's ingenious new in-store system called "Presto."



Presto: A Real-Life Teleportation Machine (for Software Updates)

Presto sounds like something straight out of science fiction: a machine that can magically update iPhones without even opening the box. But the magic here is actually clever engineering. The system uses a Mac mini as its brain and a special locker-like device to hold multiple iPhones. Here's the breakdown:

  • Boxed iPhones are placed in the Presto locker. Up to six iPhones can be accommodated at a time.
  • MagSafe wireless charging technology (the same tech used by Apple's magnetic chargers) wakes up the iPhones.
  • The iPhones are then automatically updated to the latest iOS version.
