Threads to Get "DM-ish" Feature: Messaging Arrives, But Not Quite How You Expected

Threads users, rejoice! The long-awaited messaging functionality is finally here but with a twist. Instead of a dedicated inbox within Threads, Meta is testing a system that lets you initiate chats through the app but delivers them to users' Instagram inboxes.



Threads: A Messaging App Missing DMs?

Threads, launched with much fanfare by Meta, has carved a niche for itself as a space for sharing photos and text updates with close friends. However, a glaring omission has been the lack of direct messaging (DM) capabilities. This frustration may soon ease, with Meta's current experiment integrating a messaging feature.



Initiate Chats from Threads, Delivered via Instagram Inbox

The new feature, spotted by some users, replaces the "mention" option on profiles with a "message" button. Clicking this button allows you to send a message to that user, but it lands in their Instagram inbox, not a separate Threads inbox.



Why No Dedicated Threads Inbox?

Meta has been clear about its stance. Instagram head Adam Mosseri emphasizes the complexities of maintaining two separate inboxes for Threads and Instagram. In his words, it's a choice between "notification routing weirdness" or "redundant message threads."



Is This a True DM Feature for Threads?

Technically, no. You cannot hold conversations or view past messages directly within Threads. However, it does streamline initiating chats without switching to the Instagram app.



What Does This Mean for the Future of Threads?

It's uncertain whether Threads will ever get its own dedicated inbox. Meta seems focused on leveraging the existing Instagram infrastructure, potentially aiming for a more unified messaging experience across its platforms.




So, Threads Gets Messaging-Lite

While not a full-fledged DM solution, this test signifies Meta's efforts to enhance the Threads experience. It remains to be seen if this approach resonates with users, but it's a step towards more interactive Threads.
