Currently, Nvidia reigns supreme with its powerful GPUs like the A100 and H100. These chips are specifically designed for AI workloads and have captured a significant market share (75%). However, Nvidia's dominance faces challenges.

The Rise of Custom AI Chips

Tech giants like Google, Meta (formerly Facebook), Amazon, and Microsoft are developing their own custom AI chips. Here's why:

  • Reduced Reliance on External Vendors: Building their own chips allows companies to tailor them for specific needs, potentially lowering costs and boosting performance.
  • Increased Efficiency: Custom chips offer greater efficiency compared to off-the-shelf options as companies have control over the entire hardware and software stack.



Key Players and Innovations:

  • Meta: Unveiled the next-gen MTIA chip, boasting 3x faster performance and double the compute/memory bandwidth for accelerating ranking and recommendation models. They plan to expand MTIA's capabilities to support generative AI in the future.
  • Google: Introduced two key products:
    • Axion CPU: Google's first Arm-based CPU delivers superior performance (30% better than top Arm chips, 50% better than Intel).
    • TPU v5p: The next-generation Tensor Processing Unit boasts double the processing power for faster training of complex AI models.
  • Others:
    • Amazon has multiple custom AI chip families, focusing on inference and training within their cloud services (AWS).
    • Microsoft offers the Azure Maia AI Accelerator and the Azure Cobalt 100 CPU for its cloud platform.
