WhatsApp Picture-in-Picture Gets Smarter: Now Watch Shared Videos While You Chat

WhatsApp, the world's leading messaging app, continues to refine the user experience with its latest update to the picture-in-picture (PiP) mode. Initially rolled out in February 2023, PiP allowed users to watch videos from YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook without leaving their WhatsApp chats. This update, currently in beta testing for iOS, takes things a step further by enabling PiP for videos shared directly within WhatsApp.




Previously, clicking on a shared video would open it in full screen, forcing users to exit their conversations. The upcoming PiP functionality offers a more seamless experience. Once enabled, users can watch the video in a minimized floating window, allowing them to continue browsing chats or using other app features simultaneously. This multitasking boost is a welcome improvement for users who frequently share and watch videos on WhatsApp.



Beyond YouTube and Instagram Links

Traditionally, PiP mode only worked for videos shared through links from external platforms. This update expands its functionality to encompass videos uploaded directly within the WhatsApp ecosystem. This means users can now watch funny pet videos or birthday messages from friends in a floating window, all while staying connected within their chats.

It's important to note that, for now, PiP functionality is restricted to within the WhatsApp app. While multitasking within the app is enhanced, users won't be able to minimize the window and use other apps while the video plays. However, this is still a significant improvement for users who want more control over their video viewing experience on WhatsApp.



Looking Ahead: A More Streamlined Video Experience

The introduction of PiP for shared videos reflects WhatsApp's commitment to innovation and user-centric design. This update aligns with a recent addition of new video playback options for iOS users, allowing them to skip forward or rewind videos with a simple double-tap. These features combined suggest a focus on improving the overall in-app video experience for WhatsApp users.

While the official release date for the broader PiP functionality remains unknown, it's expected to roll out to both Android and iOS users in the coming days. With this update, WhatsApp is poised to further solidify its position as a comprehensive communication platform that caters not just to messaging, but also to a more engaging multimedia experience.

    While PiP opens doors for a more versatile video experience, there are limitations to consider. Currently, the functionality is restricted within the WhatsApp app. This means you cannot utilize PiP while switching to other apps – a potential drawback for users who crave unfettered multitasking.

    However, considering the ongoing development, future updates might address this limitation. Overall, WhatsApp's PiP mode marks a significant step towards a more streamlined and user-friendly video experience within the app.
