Google Drive Updates Blur the Line Between App and Website, Enhancing Tablet User Experience

Google is rolling out a significant update to its Google Drive app for Android tablets, blurring the lines between the app and website experience. The update introduces a revamped design, dedicated columns for file details, and a full folder hierarchy for effortless navigation. These enhancements aim to streamline file management on large-screen devices, aligning with the website UI for a more seamless user experience.



Key Update Highlights

  • Revamped Design: Google Drive for tablets boasts a refreshed look, featuring a dense list view for efficient file management on larger screens.

  • File Details in Dedicated Columns: File size and last modification timestamps are now displayed in dedicated columns, facilitating quick identification of recently worked on or storage-intensive files.

  • Full Folder Hierarchy for Easy Navigation: The app now presents the complete folder hierarchy for the current view, eliminating the need to repeatedly tap back when navigating through complex folder structures.

  • Material Design 3 Integration: Google Drive adheres to Material Design 3 guidelines, ensuring consistency with other Google apps and enhancing the overall design language.



Tablet-Centric Enhancements

  • Tappable Folder Hierarchy: Emulating the website experience, the tablet app features a "tappable folder hierarchy" at the top of the screen, enabling users to effortlessly navigate out of nested folders.

  • Per-File Data Columns: Replacing the two-column list view, the app now includes "per-file data columns" to indicate when a file was last modified and its storage consumption.

  • Material Design 3 Color Palette: The app adopts a color palette consistent with Google's Material Design 3 guidelines, providing a cohesive visual experience.

  • Unified Navigation Rail: The navigation rail on the left is seamlessly integrated with the app bar, creating a more unified design and partitioning the file view into a separate section with rounded corners in the top left.



Rollout Schedule and Availability

These updates are currently rolling out to Android tablets and are expected to reach all Drive users, including those without Workspace accounts, on November 27th. The rollout is anticipated to take 15 business days to complete.
