Microsoft's DMA-Compliant Windows 11: A Step Towards Enhanced User Choice and Fair Competition

In a significant move to comply with the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), Microsoft is introducing a series of changes to Windows 11 that will empower users in the European Economic Area (EEA) with greater control over their default web browsers, search engines, and email clients. These changes, expected to be implemented in the coming weeks, represent a step towards promoting user choice and fair competition in the digital marketplace.



Key Highlights of the Changes:

  • Uninstall Pre-installed Apps: Users in the EEA will now have the ability to uninstall Microsoft Edge, the default web browser on Windows 11, along with other pre-installed apps like Photos, Cortana, and the Camera app. This newfound freedom of choice allows users to tailor their Windows experience to their preferences.

  • Disable Bing Search: The built-in Bing search functionality can be disabled by EEA users, enabling them to switch to their preferred search engine, such as Google or DuckDuckGo. This change addresses concerns about Microsoft's potential dominance in the search market.

  • Set Default Web Browser and Email Client: Users will have the flexibility to choose their preferred web browser and email client as the default options, ensuring that their preferred applications are seamlessly launched when handling relevant tasks.
