China's Singles Day sales growth subdued amid economic uncertainty

China's Singles Day sales festival wrapped up on Saturday with e-commerce giants Alibaba and JD.com reporting positive year-on-year growth, but the overall sales picture is expected to be subdued as consumers remain cautious about spending amid economic uncertainty.

Alibaba, the country's largest e-commerce player by market share, did not disclose the actual yuan value of its sales for its landmark festival, which this year celebrated its 15th anniversary. Last year, when sales were hit by continuing COVID-19 curbs across China, was the first.

JD.com, Alibaba's main rival, said its festival GMV (gross merchandising volume) hit a "record high" over the sales period, but it did not provide any specific figures.

Analysts and industry executives have said that they expect return rates to be high this year as consumers buy more in order to obtain larger discounts on checkout, only to return the items they don't need.

Items related to health and wellness and outdoor lifestyles were expected to outperform, with global brands such as Nike and Lululemon expected to sell well. Alibaba reported that sales of road bikes jumped 300% during the first hour of sales.

Color cosmetics, traditionally a strong performer throughout the Singles Day sales period, were expected to struggle this year as make-up demand remains low almost a year after China lifted strict COVID-19 restrictions.

The Singles Day sales festival is closely watched as a gauge of consumer confidence in China. The fact that Alibaba and JD.com have reported positive year-on-year growth is a positive sign, but the overall sales picture is expected to be subdued. This suggests that consumers are still cautious about spending, despite the government's efforts to boost the economy.

The subdued sales growth on Singles Day is a reflection of the current economic climate in China. The country's economy has been slowing in recent months, and consumers are concerned about rising inflation and unemployment.

The shift towards spending on necessities and away from discretionary items is also a sign of the tough economic times. Consumers are more likely to focus on essential items when they are feeling uncertain about the future.

The challenge posed by e-commerce rivals such as Douyin and Pinduoduo is also a factor in the subdued sales picture. These rivals are offering lower-cost and discounted items year-round, which is putting pressure on Alibaba and other major e-commerce platforms to offer more competitive prices.
