Takero Kato, president of Toyota’s newly established BEV Factory, experienced firsthand the manufacturing prowess of BYD during a business trip to China. Witnessing equipment and techniques that surpassed anything he had seen in Japan, Kato was struck by a sense of crisis, realizing that Toyota was falling behind.
This realization prompted Kato to spearhead a renewed focus on EV development, leading to ambitious plans for giga casting techniques, next-gen assembly lines, and advancements in battery technology. Toyota’s partnership with BYD on the bZ3 sedan played a pivotal role in this transformation.
The bZ3’s development process was marked by constant change, with engineers willing to make even the most drastic modifications to deliver a product that met customer expectations. This flexibility and adaptability stand in stark contrast to Toyota’s traditional development approach.
Kato’s experiences with BYD have had a profound impact on Toyota’s EV strategy. The company is now committed to accelerating its EV development efforts, with plans to introduce 10 new EVs based on an all-new architecture starting in 2026.
