Google Chrome Extension Manifest V3 to Replace Manifest V2 in June 2024
Google announced that Manifest V2 for Chrome extensions will be deprecated in June 2024, with Manifest V3 taking its place. Manifest V3 has been met with some criticism, particularly from adblocker developers who find the specification too restrictive. However, Google has made some changes to Manifest V3 based on developer feedback. These changes include improved content filtering support, background playback enhancements, and a new User Scripts API.
AdGuard Cautiously Optimistic About Manifest V3
AdGuard, a key player in ad blocking, has expressed cautious optimism about Manifest V3. While they have worked with Google to further improve Manifest V3 for adblocking purposes, they still have concerns about the limitations of the new specification.
Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) Says Extensions Must Innovate
The EFF, a digital privacy nonprofit, has also expressed concern about Manifest V3. They believe that the new specification could limit the ability of extensions to innovate, which would ultimately benefit trackers over users.
Google Faces Lawsuits Over Aggressive Stance on Adblockers
Google's aggressive stance on adblockers has also been met with criticism. The company has started retaliating against adblockers on YouTube by preventing users who use these tools from accessing videos. This has led to privacy lawsuits in the EU.

The move to Manifest V3 is a significant change for Chrome extensions. While there are some concerns about the new specification, Google has made some changes based on developer feedback. It remains to be seen how Manifest V3 will impact the extension ecosystem in the long term.
