Google to Delete Inactive Gmail Accounts Starting December 1, 2023

Google has announced that it will begin deleting inactive Gmail accounts on December 1, 2023. An inactive account is defined as one that has not been used in two years. This policy only applies to personal accounts, not those associated with organizations, schools, or employers.

There are a few exceptions to this policy. For example, accounts that have been used to purchase a Google app, product, service, or subscription that is current or ongoing will not be marked for deletion. Accounts with funds in the form of gift card account with published games or apps with active subscriptions, accounts that monitor a child's account with Family Link, and accounts that have purchased digital items like a movie or e-book will also not be deleted.




Google will send notifications to inactive account holders before deletion, as well as a recovery email if applicable.

To prevent Google from deleting your unused Gmail account, you can log in before December 1, 2023. You can also export your Gmail data and Google Photos content before your account is deleted.




This policy change is likely to have a significant impact on Gmail users. According to a recent study, over 1 billion Gmail accounts are inactive. This means that millions of accounts could be deleted in the coming months.



There are a few reasons why Google may have decided to implement this policy. First, it can help to free up storage space on Google's servers. Second, it can help to improve security by reducing the number of inactive accounts that could be compromised. Third, it can help to streamline Google's services and provide a more efficient experience for users.



However, there are also some potential drawbacks to this policy. Some users may be concerned about the loss of their data, even if they have not used their accounts in a while. Additionally, some users may simply forget to log in to their accounts before they are deleted.
