Microsoft Unveils Custom Chips to Power AI Services and Compete with Cloud Rivals
In a move to address the rising costs of delivering artificial intelligence (AI) services, Microsoft has announced the development of two custom-designed computing chips: Maia and Cobalt. These chips are intended to power Microsoft's own subscription software offerings and Azure cloud computing services, enabling the company to offer faster, lower-cost, and higher-quality AI solutions to its customers.
Maia: Optimized for Large Language Models
The Maia chip is specifically designed to run large language models (LLMs), a type of AI software that underpins Microsoft's Azure OpenAI service and is the result of Microsoft's collaboration with ChatGPT creator OpenAI. LLMs are capable of generating text, translating languages, and writing different kinds of creative content, making them increasingly valuable for a wide range of applications.
Cobalt: Targeting Cloud Computing and Internal Cost Savings
Microsoft's second chip, Cobalt, is a central processing unit (CPU) built using technology from Arm Holdings. It serves both as an internal cost-saving measure and a competitive response to Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft's primary cloud rival. Cobalt is already being tested to power Microsoft Teams, the company's business messaging tool, and Microsoft intends to offer direct access to Cobalt to compete with AWS's Graviton series of in-house chips.
Standardization Approach for Networking
Microsoft's approach to networking for the Maia chip differs from its previous supercomputers for OpenAI. Instead of utilizing a more expensive custom Nvidia networking technology, Maia will rely on standard Ethernet network cabling, indicating a focus on cost-effectiveness and standardization.
